(Early 2002) 800mhz Pentium III M, 256M ram, 20G hard drive, a very sharp and bright 10.4" TFT (1024x768), v.90 modem, i.LINK, Ethernet, wireless LAN, memory stick, 100mhz bus, external CD, 4-6 hour standard battery life (lithium). Best of all: 1.1" x 10.2" x 7.7" (HxWxD), and just 2.76 pounds (with the battery). It runs Windows XP, with Python for all programming tasks. My prior laptops (here and here) used to be state of the art, but both started feeling slow and heavy over time. This new machine is faster, smaller, one pound lighter, and about half the price of my prior laptop (this one was about $1500). Sony sites: here, and here.
The future?--the U1, an even smaller 1.8 pound Sony Vaio machine, built around the Transmeta Crusoe processor. Available in Japan today from Sony Japan, or by import from Dynamism. Also available, and currently Transmeta-based, but slightly larger: the 2.2 pound C1 PictureBook, described here.
[Update: newer machine, described here.]
